QUEBEC — Lea and William remain the most popular boy names and girl names in Quebec for the second year running.
According to 2007 statistics released by the province on Monday, 456 families picked Lea as the name for their little girl. William was the moniker of choice for 857 families welcoming a boy. The names were compiled from a list of newborns whose parents have applied for child-care assistance.
Jade, Rosalie, Florence and Juliette round out the top five names for girls and Samuel, Gabriel, Nathan and Alexis for the boys.
Apart from some jockeying for position in 2007, there isn't much fluctuation among the boys compared to last year.
Not so for the girl names. Laurie, which was popular enough to claim seventh spot in 2006, fell off the top 20 this year.
And Oceane dropped to number 20 from ninth one year earlier.
